American Academy in Rome
I was a 2009 Rome Prize winner in Musical Composition, and was in residence at the Academy in Rome from September 2009 to August 2010.
Boston Modern Orchestra Project
I served as Composer-in-Residence of BMOP for three years from 2006-09, under the auspices of Music Alive, a program jointly administered by ASOL and Meet The Composer.
Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study
As a 2007-08 Fellow, I joined 44 others in Cambridge for a whole season of sharing ideas and making new work in the stimulating Harvard-Radcliffe environment. The Institute is one of the co-commissioners of the Double Violin Concerto for BMOP, Colin Jacobsen and Carla Kihlstedt.
MATA Festival
In 1997, Philip Glass, Eleanor Sandresky and I founded Music At The Anthology, an organization dedicated to young composers and the commissioning and premiering of their works. I served as Artistic Director for ten years, and am now Artistic Director Emeritus. We are proud to have commissioned 44 new works and presented over 180 young composers since we began.
New York Youth Symphony Making Score Program
The Making Score program was founded in 2000 by its director Derek Bermel. I served as assistant director, teaching young composers aged 12-22 in private sessions and in seminars on score and parts preparation.
Creative Capital Foundation
Creative Capital gives multi-year grants to individual artists for projects in a variety of disciplines. “Chance Encounter” is one of 43 projects that received grants this year.
UC San Diego Search Event
In 2002, I was invited to give a lecture on “The Future of Music” at UC San Diego as part of their two-year Search event, during which composers of all ages were invited to give a talk on this same topic. The entire transcript of my lecture appears at this site.
String Orchestra of New York City (SONYC)
In 2003, SONYC was a guest group on the MATA Festival, where they gave the world premiere of my string orchestra piece, “The Trojan Women.” SONYC produced a CD for Albany Records called First Takes featuring this piece, plus works by Theofanidis, Moravec and Gatonska (whose work was commissioned by the MATA Festival).
American Music Center
I was a member of the board at AMC for several years. They are the parent organization of the award-winning webmag www.newmusicbox.org.
